This one-page Build Your Nest (BYN) planning tool simplifies the full BYN framework—helping families connect with essential perinatal services while honoring cultural wisdom and the vital role of social support.
We want parents to feel empowered to plan for Rest, Support, and Care—and to know when and whom to call for help. It really is that simple.
The tool is customizable for agencies and service providers and encourages parents to take an active role by adding their own notes, contacts, and community resources.
It emphasizes the importance of:

How It’s Used
Prenatally, it serves as a framework for parent education in both medical and community-based settings.
Postpartum, it becomes a conversation tool that supports families in real time to assess needs and make referrals.
The Backstory
From the earliest drafts of the Build Your Nest workbook, people have asked for a shorter, more accessible version. In 2024, that vision finally became a reality. I developed the BYN One-Page Postpartum Planning Tool in support of midwife Joanna Wilder DNP, CNM, CPM, who needed a concise and adaptable resource for her hospital-based midwifery care Doctoral Nursing Practice Quality Improvement Project.
The one-page tool was then incorporated into a larger quality improvement toolkit, which we developed to demonstrate how postpartum planning can be integrated into prenatal care in a diverse setting.
Currently, the BYN tool is being used by social workers, midwives, and doulas at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Legacy Health, Mariposa Midwifery, Portland New Family Fund, and the BYN Postpartum Navigator Pilot Project.
